Information on research on blindness and paintings

It is with great pleasure that I make a special announcement about my research with Rebecca McGinnis at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, on blind people's understanding of paintings.

The project is funded by a US-UK Fulbright All Disciplines Scholars' Award and will begin on the 19th July, ending in Boston, Massachusetts on the 14th October. During these three months I will be investigating the following aspects of blind people's understanding of the painting collection in the Metropolitan Museum's galleries and through their website.

Through interviews and observations the research project aims to discover:
- strategies for conceptualising paintings non-visually
- the problems blind and visually impaired museum visitors encounter whilst visiting the Metropolitan
- whether blind and visually impaired museum visitors “picture” images
- how blind and visually impaired museum visitors imagine paintings' subjects and compositions
- blind and visually impaired museum visitors’ understanding of visual concepts discussed in the composition of paintings, and in particular: Tone, Perspective, Colour.

The objectives of this research are to discover:
- if museum visitors who are born blind or become blind early in their life are different from museum visitors who have become blind later in life
- the conceptualisation of art works by blind and visually impaired visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art
- the use of two-dimensional art works in existing tours for blind and visually impaired visitors
- whether it is possible to increase access to art works for blind and visually impaired people through electronic media, such as websites.

If you are registered blind and would like to participate in this study - your name will be kept anonymous - I would be more than delighted to hear from you. Please click on the "contact us" email link near the top of this page.
